Rekindling the Intellectual, Spiritual, Creative legacy of Christians in Culture

twilight_book_coverTwilight in book form is a runaway best seller. Twilight, the film has been described as "a full-blown cultural phenomena" (LA Times), "The most epic romance since titanic (, "Phenomenal, magnificent" (Wireless Magazine). Twilight opens with these lines, "About three things I was absolutely positive: First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-and I didn't know how dominant that part might be-that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him." Host Dick Staub facilitates a discussion about Twilight with guests Jennie Spohr film critic, ordained Presbyterian clergy and Dr. Jeff Keuss a professor at SPU and an engaging interpreter of theology in popular culture.

  1. The one thing that hasn’t been said or talked about is the most obvious. Drawing a comparison between Twilight and Titanic is the key. Sacrificial love. That’s it. All of it!
Women went back in droves to see and cry over Titanic over and over again. It moved women because of one thing; it was an incredible thing to imagine a man giving his life for his woman. The movie itself was tiresome, but not the main theme. Sacrificial love. Women crave that.
I have talked with so many young women and the thing that moves them is Edward wanting her, desiring her in a newly expressed vampire form other than sexual lust-which they are totally insensitive to, but holding her welfare, her best interest, her, above his thirst. They are reading vampire/blood thirst and relating and resonating to ‘wow, could there be a man who would protect me from himself… put me above his own wants, needs, lust?’
It automatically flips in their brain to a parable/metaphor that grips their hearts, not fantasizing just about vampires but a man who would do this…..
Nothing in any form,( books, tv, movies, magazines) available currently has expressed this amazing possibility or different way of experiencing ‘love’. These girls are dreaming new dreams…… new possibilities, the bar is higher.
Guys should be asking questions and learning, because a man who will sacrificially love you -has a devoted woman. I know, I am one….. 🙂
